Indirubin is the red shade of Indigo, the anti-inflammatory & barrier repairing phytochemical.
Known as “Samurai Blue”, Japanese Indigo was used topically to treat wounds and inflammation. During the Edo period, Japan’s Samurai wore a layer of indigo-dyed cotton beneath their armor to help heal injuries.

This salve is made from a homegrown Japanese Indigo extract. It is a 6 month process from seed to harvest to extraction to product. I used fresh Indigo leaves from my garden to make a fermented powder extract that was then infused in Olive oil for several weeks, resulting in an Indirubin rich red colored oil.

The red-purple color is indicative of the active constituent Indirubin. Indirubin has been used medicinally in Traditional Chinese Medicine as not only a topical agent but also internally to treat inflammatory conditions and autoimmune diseases. Recent studies confirm the medicinal qualities of Indigo… and show the antiviral, anti-inflammatory & immunomodulatory actions of Indirubin and its derivatives. Indirubin is a dynamic isometric compound that supports the skin’s natural barrier function and helps tame inflammation.
